Dimensions of Teeth & Methods of Measurement

Basics of Dental Anatomy

A good knowledge and understanding of the dimensions of all the teeth forms the foundation of dental anatomy as well as the dental practice. Dr. G. V. Black provided a table for the average measurements for the permanent teeth, however, teeth carved or drawn from these average dimensions cannot be set into place for ideal occlusion. Hence, minor changes have been made in Dr. Black's table for producing an ideal set of articulated teeth.

Measurement of Teeth

There are eight calibrations of each tooth to be remembered and these are measured using Boley gauge. The parallel beaks of the Boley gauge should be used whenever feasible, as the contrast of various curvatures with the straight edges makes the close observer more familiar with tooth outlines.

  1. Crown length (labial / buccal) : Crest of curvature at cementoenamel junction to the incisal edge (buccal cusp or cusps).
  2. Root length : Apex of root to the crest of curvature at crown cervix.
  3. Mesiodistal diameter of crown : Crest of curvature on mesial surface (mesial contact area) to the crest of curvature on distal surface (distal contact area).
  4. Mesiodistal diameter of crown at the cervix : Junction of crown and root on mesial surface to the junction of crown and root on distal surface.
  5. Labiolingual (Buccolingual) diameter of crown : Crest of curvature on labial / buccal surface to the crest of curvature on lingual surface.
  6. Labiolingual (Buccolingual) diameter of crown at the cervix : Junction of crown and root on labial / buccal surface to the junction of crown and root on lingual surface.
  7. Curvature of cementoenamel junction on mesial : Crest of curvature of cementoenamel junction on labial (buccal) and lingual surfaces to the crest of curvature of cementoenamel junction on mesial surface.
  8. Curvature of cementoenamel junction on distal : Crest of curvature of cementoenamel junction on labial (buccal) and lingual surfaces to crest of curvature of cementoenamel junction on distal surface.
